Call To Action: Right To Work (For Less) Hearing On Tues Jan 10th

Hi folks,

The New Hampshire Senate will be holding a hearing on so called "Right to Work' on Tuesday, January 10, at 1:00 PM at Representatives Hall at the State House in Concord. We need you to show up and bring a friend with you, if you can. We all know that "Right to Work" is the preferred method to destroy unions in this country. This is wrong for businesses and wrong for New Hampshire workers and their families. The Senate is trying to ram this bill through which explains the short notice and lack of fanfare or advertising about it. They believe with short notice, they will not get many people to the hearing and thus not hear the will of New Hampshire workers. Even if you can only come to the State House for a few minutes, your voice could make a difference. Please attend in person, sign in, in opposition of Senate Bill 11-FN. If you cannot attend, please write your senator, representatives, executive council member, and the Governor, and let them know that you do not support "Right to Work" legislation, as it only destroys workers' rights and favors opposition of Corporate bosses. These kinds of bills are drafted by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an organization funded by the Koch Brothers.

This bill prohibits collective bargaining agreements that require employees to join or contribute to a labor union.

Special Election To Be Held In State Rep. District 1

Tuesday, August 18, 2015

A special election will be held in the towns of Milton and Middleton on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to fill the vacant Strafford County District 1 state representative seat.

Milton voters should go to the Milton Assembly of God church located at 370 White Mountain Highway in Milton. Middleton voters can cast their vote at the town office located at 182 Kings Highway, Middleton. Polling will go from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at both locations.

There are three people on the ballot, all residents of Milton.

Larry Brown, 72, has lived in Milton for 19 years. He is a Democrat who serves on Milton’s Planning Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment and Budget Committee. He is also a cemetery and library trustee and volunteers at the New Hampshire Farm Museum in Milton.

Brown has already served three terms as a state rep from 2004 to 2010. During that time he chaired the executive board for the Strafford Regional Planning Commission. He ran for state rep. again in 2012 and lost by 32 votes.

Brown said he is running because he wishes to lower the cost of property taxes, fund education, and help people have access to healthcare.

Brown is retired and lives with his wife, Susann. They have been married for 48 years. He has two adult children. He has previously worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, a social worker, and in administration for the state’s psychiatric hospital’s Medicaid program.

TriTown Democrats to Host Jeff McLynch from the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute on July 9, 2015.

Farmington, New Hampshire - June 22, 2015 - The TriTown Democrats, representing the Democratic Committees of Farmington, Milton, and New Durham, is proud to host Jeff McLynch, the executive director from the NH Fiscal Policy Institute, to give a talk on the NH State Budget process. The event will take place at 7:00 PM on July 9 at the Emma Ramsey Center, 424 White Mountain Highway, Milton.

The New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute (NHFPI) is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to exploring, developing, and promoting public policies that foster economic opportunity and prosperity for all New Hampshire residents. Their emphasis is on low- and moderate-income families and individuals. The Institute, based in Concord, produces regular reports on the fiscal and economic challenges facing New Hampshire and serves as a resource to anyone interested in meeting those challenges in a fair and sound fashion. NHFPI aims to illustrate recent budget trends, highlight future challenges, and examine the ways in which the New Hampshire budget is used to educate the state’s children, ensure access to health care, promote public safety, maintain public structures, and achieve other critical public priorities. In its efforts to promote equitable, responsible, and sustainable fiscal and economic policies, NHFPI collaborates with two national networks of state-level policy research organizations, the State Priorities Partnership (SPP) and the Economic Analysis and Research Network (EARN).

Jeff McLynch. the NHFPI Executive Director, manages the organization’s daily operations and oversees its research, communications, and outreach efforts. He previously served as the State Policy Director at the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, where he helped coordinate its efforts to provide policymakers and the public with accurate and timely information on tax systems across the U.S. Jeff also served as the Deputy Director of the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center and on the professional staff of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means. He holds a Masters of Public Policy from Georgetown University.

The TriTown Democratic Committee advocates for strong local support of our communities, and supports legislation and candidates that are community minded. Their activities provide political, economic, and social information for the citizens of the three towns, but also encourages progressive movements in these areas at all levels of government. The budget process for NH is underway. The Governor has proposed her budget. The NH House of Representatives has proposed their budget that most believe to be irresponsible to the people of NH. The budget process has now crossed over to the NH Senate. It is important that Granite Staters have some knowledge of this process, of the proposed cuts and know what action they may be able to take during this critical part of the cycle.

"From the moment the bill was introduced by the Speaker, things went really, really wrong. Angry legislators (from both parties) excoriated the students for wasting their time. For those who need a reminder, these kids are 9 and 10 years old. Representative Christy Bartlett testified at length. Tri-Dems Meeting Feature, Rep. Jackie Cilley, A Local Hit

Former candidate for Governor, Representative Jackie Cilley was our featured speaker for March. We've had Jackie speak to us many times and she is always a dynamic speaker with a good sense of humor and this visit was no exception. Yesterday, just before Jackie spoke with us, she was defending a bill she sponsored to establish a living wage in New Hampshire of $14.25. As you may know, that bill did not pass, but that did not dampen her passion for this bill or her resolve to champion it so that more people in New Hampshire can live with their families above the poverty line and off state assistance, saving the taxpayers money. She also spoke with us about other important issues for this legislative session. She has some great ideas for the future and we were very happy to discuss them with her. Afterward, Milton had their caucus and the rest if us enjoyed the bountiful appetizers and deserts we provided for the event. We look forward to having Jackie back again in the near future. She is always a favorite in our group.

Right To Work for Less Just Won't Go Away

It wouldn’t be a NH legislative session if Right to Work (for less) wasn’t on the docket. The cookie cutter legislation that is so damaging to middle class working families came up again this week in the form of SB217, sponsored by Senator John Reagan, R-Deerfield.

Regrettably, earlier this week, the Senate Finance Committee backed the latest iteration of the bill after hearing familiar arguments from both sides of the always-controversial issue.

We are pleased and appreciate that Gov. Maggie Hassan expressed her opposition in a strongly-worded letter to the committee.

She wrote that a right to- work law would “undercut the fundamental right of employees to engage in collective bargaining with their employers and cause unnecessary economic harm to New Hampshire’s hard-working families.” The Bill will be voted on in the full Senate next Thursday, January 30. We urge all members to contact their state Senator and register your opposition to this bill that would be devastating to workers across the state.
